It is our super-ego and ego that imposes shame and moralising on our enjoyment of these things, but the Id doesn’t give a shit - if it likes rapefic, it likes rapefic, and that’s that. Sometimes it’s good to go deeper and give the animal subconscious something to sink its teeth into as well. It’s good to satisfy the Id! It can’t all be our ego and our consciousness and so forth. There is so much of it that would be wrong in real life, and yet as a fic I just love it. Another oneshot of mine which I haven’t put up yet - the AA oneshot Salt Water - is pure Id Fic (hell, it’s literally tagged with ‘magical healing cock’). For example, Game Theory hits a lot of my own *personal* kinks, and I love it. On an authorial level, it’s a fic that caters to your own personal, narrative kinks. But yeah, the idea with Id Fic is that it is those fics that we read or write that we might be a little like ‘yeah I just completely enjoy this even though I know the actions contained within are totally *wrong* in real life.’ A lot of fics don’t know they’re Id Fics, and that’s okay too, because it’s a meta term that’s more common amongst people who read a lot of fics, but are also involved in fandom and like acquiring terminology. Game Theory falls under the Id Fic category, but it also plays with it a little bit, in that it introduces a fair bit of plot and so on. These people usually go after women or queer writers, or worse - abuse and assault survivors, and very rarely turn those same arguments onto say…violence in videogames or cinema. ![]() ![]() Id Fics used to be considered a ‘guilty’ pleasure, but there’s been a lot of work to reclaim them.Īs time goes by, callout culture has seen groups of people dogpiling, bullying and even doxxing those who enjoy Id Fics, trying to incite shame, or worse, policing the content of what other people write as fiction. So they might just have like a lot of rape in them, or non-con, or ‘dub-con where the character eventually enjoys it.’ They might have things that we *know* are wrong in real life, but really dig in fiction: like captive/captor, or magical healing cock, or really dangerous powerplay, whump that is just extreme, or even just really unsafe kinks (like no signs of safewording ever). The idea is that Id Fic panders to the Id, or that part of us that likes things that aren’t always moral or ‘correct’ and bypasses a lot of our moral constraints and strictures. “The premise is a celebration of those fics you should be ashamed of enjoying and you know they’re kinda bad but you can’t help it, you love them anyways: id!fic.” Lirazel has one of the best descriptions:
